Blocked, Ghosted, Reported: Are We Losing the Art of Healthy Disagreement?

Not long ago, friendships were tested in playground arguments, awkward apologies and learning how to sit with discomfort.

Today, many disagreements happen behind screens, and often end there too.

A message is left on “seen.”
A friend disappears without explanation.
A disagreement escalates into a block… or even a report.

No resolution. No conversation. No growth.

What’s Changed?

For many of our children, two powerful forces have quietly reshaped how they handle relationships:

The online world, where:
- communication is instant, but often impulsive
- conflict can be avoided with a single click
- “unfollow”, “block”, and “report” replace conversation
The COVID years, where:
- social development was interrupted at a crucial stage
- difficult conversations were limited, or avoided entirely
- many young people missed the everyday practice of negotiating friendships face-to-face

The result?

A generation that is highly connected, but sometimes under-practised in disagreeing well.

Why This Matters

Learning how to navigate disagreement is not just a “social skill” - it is a life skill!

According to research from the American Psychological Association, young people who develop healthy conflict resolution skills show greater emotional regulation, stronger relationships, and higher resilience later in life.

It teaches young people to:

tolerate discomfort
see perspectives beyond their own
repair relationships, not just end them
build resilience and emotional maturity

Without this, conflict can feel overwhelming… and avoidance becomes the default.

What We’re Seeing More Of

You may have noticed:

friendships ending abruptly, with little explanation
small misunderstandings escalating quickly online
reluctance to have even mildly uncomfortable conversations
“reporting” behaviour being used socially, not just for safety

While tools like blocking and reporting are important for protecting young people, they are not designed to replace everyday relationship skills.

The Dinner Table Conversation

You don’t need a lecture; just an open, curious conversation.

You might ask:

“Have you ever fallen out with a friend online? What happened next?”
“Is it easier to message or talk face-to-face when something is wrong? Why?”
“When do you think it’s right to block someone? When might it be better to talk?”
“What makes a disagreement feel ‘too uncomfortable’?”

Listen more than you speak. The goal is understanding, not correcting.

What We Can Gently Teach

Children don’t avoid conflict because they are careless; often, it’s because they don’t feel equipped.

We can support them by modelling and encouraging:

Pausing before reacting
Not every message needs an immediate response.

Choosing conversation over avoidance (when safe)
“Can we talk about this?” is a powerful skill.

Understanding intent vs impact
Not everything online is meant as it is received.

Repair over rupture
Friendships can survive disagreement, and often grow stronger because of it.

A Small Family Challenge

This week, try this:

Share a time when you had a disagreement with a friend or colleague, and how you handled it.

Not perfectly. Just honestly.

Children learn most not from what we say… but from what we are willing to show.

Final Thought

In a world where it is easier than ever to disconnect, we may need to work a little harder to teach our children how to stay: to listen, to speak, and sometimes… to disagree.

Because strong relationships are not built on always agreeing, but on knowing how to find your way back to each other.
