From Change to Growth: Building Resilience During Stressful Times

Whether it is starting a new academic year, adjusting to new expectations, navigating friendships or coping with everyday challenges, change is an inevitable part of every child's journey. While change can sometimes feel uncomfortable or overwhelming, it also presents valuable opportunities for growth, learning and self-discovery.

When Change Feels Challenging

The beginning of a new school year often brings excitement. New teachers, new classmates, new routines and new opportunities can all be positive experiences. Yet even positive changes can feel difficult. While adults may see a new situation as an exciting opportunity, children may be asking themselves: "Will I fit in?", "Will I make new friends?", "What if I don't do well?".

What is important to remember is that children do not simply react to events themselves. They react to how they interpret those events. The same situation can feel exciting to one child and intimidating to another. Understanding this helps us respond with empathy and patience when children seem worried, frustrated or reluctant to embrace change.

Resilience Is Not the Absence of Difficulty

As parents and educators, our instinct is often to protect children from discomfort. We want to solve problems, remove obstacles and help them feel better as quickly as possible. However, resilience does not develop when children avoid challenges. It develops when they experience manageable difficulties and learn that they are capable of overcoming them.

Our role is not to remove every obstacle from a child's path. Rather, it is to walk alongside them, offering guidance, encouragement and support while allowing them to develop confidence through experience. Children do not build resilience by hearing that life will always be easy. They build resilience by discovering that they can cope when life becomes difficult.

Focusing on What We Can Control

Periods of change often bring uncertainty, which can easily become a source of stress. One helpful approach is to guide children towards what is within their control rather than what is outside it.

We can encourage them to focus on:

their effort;

their choices;

their attitudes and responses;

the available support.

When children learn to ask themselves "What can I do right now?" rather than "Why is this happening to me?", they begin to develop a stronger sense of confidence and responsibility.

A Simple Framework for Supportive Conversations

Children need understanding before they need solutions.

When they feel understood, they are often far more willing to explore solutions, accept guidance and engage in problem-solving.

A simple four-step approach can make a significant difference:

Listen → Validate → Explore → Support

Listen to understand.

Validate the child's feelings and perspective.

Explore possible options together.

Support without taking complete control of the situation.

Validation does not mean agreeing with everything a child says or feels. It simply means acknowledging their experience and helping them feel heard. This approach helps children develop emotional awareness, problem-solving skills and independence, while knowing that trusted adults are there to support them.

From Change to Growth

Every child will experience moments of uncertainty, disappointment and challenge. These experiences are a natural and important part of growing up. While we cannot remove every difficulty from our children's lives, we can help them feel supported, understand their emotions, identify what they can influence, make thoughtful choices and grow in confidence through experience. Over time, these experiences become the foundation of resilience.

Confidence does not grow from hearing: "Everything will be fine."

Confidence grows from discovering: "I can handle difficult things."

Perhaps that is one of the greatest gifts we can offer our children, both at home and at school: not a life without challenges, but the belief that they have the skills, support and resilience to navigate whatever comes next.
