Sleep is an active, organised process: while resting, children’s brains strengthen neural connections, process new learning, regulate emotions and support healthy development. It is the invisible partner to everything we do at school and underpins performance at every stage.

Protecting sleep supports attention, resilience, confidence and long-term health. Quite simply, sleep is a secret superpower – available to every child.

What Happens When We Sleep?

Research from shows that while children sleep:

The brain processes and stores new information (memory consolidation).

Learning from the day is strengthened and organised.

Sleep and Emotional Wellbeing

One of the first areas affected by insufficient sleep is emotional regulation.

Are We Ever Too Old to Nap?

Teenagers may also benefit from a 20–30 minute afternoon nap, improving alertness and mood without disrupting night-time sleep. Small, consistent routines can make a significant difference:

Maintain a regular bedtime and wake-up time, including weekends.
Establish a calm and predictable bedtime routine.
Avoid screens at least one hour before bed.
Keep bedrooms cool, dark and free from digital distraction.
Encourage daily physical activity and exposure to natural daylight.

For older students, collaborative conversations about workload, revision planning and digital boundaries support increasing independence and responsibility.
