Food, Feelings and Filters: Supporting Healthy Relationships with Body and Media

When we were growing up, comparison was limited: to a classroom, a sports team, maybe a magazine cover.
Today, our children carry comparison in their pockets. Not just occasionally. But constantly.

The teenage brain is particularly sensitive to belonging, approval and social ranking. What may seem like “just a trend” to adults can feel deeply personal to a young person navigating identity, friendships and self-worth.

When a young person becomes preoccupied with food or appearance, it is often not about food at all, it is about feelings.

Research over the past decade has consistently shown a link between heavy social media use and increased body dissatisfaction, particularly among adolescents (Royal Society for Public Health, 2017; APA, 2023). The relationship is complex, but it is significant. Most young people will not develop a clinical eating disorder. However, many will experience periods of body dissatisfaction or comparison. These moments are not unusual, but they are important.

This dinner talk is not about blaming social media. It is not about panic. It is about understanding the quiet pressures our children navigate and how we can support them with confidence and calm.

But first, let's look at:

The Digital Mirror

Children today:

See hundreds of edited bodies daily
Are exposed to “What I eat in a day” content
Encounter gym transformation culture at 13–14
Receive algorithm-driven repetition of the same body ideal

The developing adolescent brain is highly sensitive to peer approval and comparison and social media amplifies both. This isn’t about vanity. It’s about neurological development.

2. Food Is Not Just Food

For teenagers, food can become:

Control
Identity
Social belonging
Anxiety management
A way to “improve” themselves

When a young person starts controlling food, it often isn’t about food. It’s about feelings.

The “Filter Effect”

Visual Distortion

Edited skin
Altered waistlines
Unrealistic muscle definition

Teenagers forget what normal bodies look like.

Algorithm Reinforcement

Once a child:

Clicks one fitness video
Watches one dieting clip

Their entire feed becomes saturated and parents are often unaware.

Comparison Culture

It’s no longer:

“She’s prettier than me.”

It becomes:

“Thousands of people look better than me.”

That scale changes everything.

Gentle Signs Parents Might Notice:

Sudden change in eating habits

Skipping meals

Increased focus on “healthy” eating to an extreme

Obsessive gym behaviour

Irritability around food

Body-checking in mirrors

Wearing oversised clothes

Secretive phone use around fitness/diet content

Conversations That Matter at Home

Rather than removing social media entirely, the more powerful approach is strengthening how children interpret what they see.

Some helpful conversation starters may include:

“What do you think has been edited in this image?”
“How do you feel after scrolling for a while?”
“What do you think makes this post so popular?”
“What do you notice about the types of bodies that get attention online?”

Messages we model:

✔ Avoid commenting on weight (theirs or yours)
✔ Avoid labelling food as “good” or “bad”
✔ Eat together when possible
✔ Model balance
✔ Speak kindly about your own body

Children internalise what they hear repeatedly.

Adolescence is a period of growth, experimentation and self-discovery. With steady guidance, most young people develop healthy, balanced relationships with both food and media.

Our children do not need perfect bodies.
They need safe conversations.
They need adults who notice gently, listen carefully and respond calmly.

When feelings are understood, food becomes just food again.
And filters begin to lose their power.
