One of the most exciting and emotional events - The World Scholar's Cup, Regional Round 2022, Sofia took place this weekend and allowed more than 300 students from 12 schools in Sofia the opportunity to test their knowledge in a series of debates, creative writing, and general academic challenges. And for the sixth year in a row, St. George International School and Preschool hosted the competition.
The topics of the team debates for the Juniors Division, on which the 4th to 7th graders had to defend their arguments, were: "That old Disney movies should be updated to reflect more modern values", "That social media channels has made it easier for people to recover from their mistakes”, and “That if enlightened aliens offered to repair the Earth’s environment for us, we should let them”.
The Seniors Division had to roll up their sleeves on the following topics: "That movie scripts should only use language that is easy to translate", "That investors should start building beach resorts on the coast of Antarctica", and "That everyone should have one day a year that they get undo and live over again".
Following the debates, both divisions took place in Collaborative Writing and Scholar's Challenge. In the first one, the students had to write an essay on topics covering the subjects of history, literature, music, art, science and social studies. During the Scholar’s Challenge they had to answer 120 academic test questions in 60 minutes.
On the second day of the competition, a "Showcase" was traditionally held, in which eight of the most prominent and good debaters, awarded in the team debates of the previous day, took part. Our 4th-grade graduate, Mia P., was among those selected, presenting brilliant arguments and admiring the audience and the jury.
After the end of the debate, it was the turn of the "Scholar's Show". The participants gave their best, and the audience had the opportunity to enjoy a rich program of musical and instrumental performances, jokes, dances, demonstrations of eating with lemons, speeding Rubik's cube, kendama, and even a short taekwondo lesson.
Of course, as in any competition, the award ceremony was the most exciting, long-awaited, and emotional part of the program, both for the participants and their parents, who watched the event via live internet connection in the special area for them.
We are extremely excited and happy with the many medals and trophies that the students of St. George International School and Preschool deservedly won, and we want to share with you some of them, namely:
