After more than three months in open-water, on October 6 at 7 p.m. Bulgarian time, our 11th grade student Max and his father Stefan docked at the marina of Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados. Their mission was to cross the Atlantic Ocean from Europe to South America in their small rowing boat, which they built themselves in their garage in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Since the start of their adventure at the port of Portimao in Portugal on June 14, 2020, Max and Stefan have travelled 8,230 km. by rowing only. With his unique achievement, the 17-year-old Max set a world record for the youngest rower to cross the Atlantic.
This voyage in fact is the "First Ocean Rowing Expedition of Bulgaria", as well as the "First crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by rowing boat from east to west during the hurricane season (July-October)".
In spite of the several technological damages, hurricanes, tropical storms, encounters with pirates, becalmed conditions in the Intertropical Convergence Zone, the unforeseen extension of the originally planned route by 1800 km. due to restrictions related to COVID-19, our heroes stubbornly and eagerly were moving forward.
Dear Max and Stefan, our words are too little to describe how proud we are of your achievements and how much we appreciate the nobility you have shown, by supporting the cause “Yes! For life". For us in 2020, you brought meaning, life, inspiration and created history!
Be blessed and move confidently forward to conquer new dreams and heights.
Thank you for being the good example that comes in the right time at the right place.
Bulgaria needs you!
